Presentation
Anne Tursz is a paediatrician and epidemiologist, with additional training in health economics. She is presently Emeritus Research Director at Inserm. She has worked in two main areas: 1) the use of health systems by children; 2) accidental and intentional traumatology in children. She carried out these activities at Inserm and at the International Children’s Centre. At the latter institution, she was a consultant from 1980 to 1992, then scientific director from 1992 to 1997.
In the first area of research, she worked in a pluridisciplinary framework with researchers in anthropology and economics, both in France and in African countries (in particular as coordinator of a large North-South project, financed by several successive European FPRDs). In the early 1980s she carried out a large population-based study on childhood accidental injuries in France, including both the public and private health care sectors, with the aim of estimating their frequency. Finally, in the area of child abuse she did research on homicides of under-one infants that demonstrated the massive underestimation of this problem in France.
Wishing to disseminate these results among policy makers, she has had significant activities as an expert (to WHO, the EU, French ministries, the French National Authority for Health, etc). She also chaired the Interministerial Steering Committee of the National Programme "Violence and Health" and participated in the preparation of the 2007 law reforming child protection statutes.
She has published numerous books, including "Les oubliés. Enfants maltraités en France et par la France", 2010, Éditions du Seuil). "The Forgotten: Children abused in France and by France".
