Dissertation defended on 1 December 2022: Domesticating mental distress? Practices and experiences of mental health home-based support

Dissertation under the direction of Isabelle Ville (CEMS) et Nicolas Henckes (Cermes3)

This dissertation focuses on the support of people suffering from severe psychiatric disorders in France. It has a twofold objective: to understand, characterise and qualify this nebula of medical, paramedical and socio-educational practices, on the one hand; and, on the other hand, to report on the effects of this work on the daily life of the "persons being supported". This study is based on a field survey carried out in the Paris region and consisting of semi-directive interviews (with support professionals and the beneficiaries of their intervention) and direct observation of the actions undertaken by three support teams: a support team for public psychiatric patients living in supported housing; a team from a Social Life Support Service (SAVS); and, finally, a team from a Medical-Social Support Service for Disabled Adults (SAMSAH). In the light of the sociology of disability and mental health and the sociology of housing, this work is at the crossroads of a sociology of work and an analysis of both the implementation and reception of the policy of support for people with psychological disabilities.
